To run Project Ironfist:

  1. Download the installer from http://ironfi.st/download/
  2. Run the installer and follow the instructions. Install the game in the same directory as your Heroes II installation. (For users on Windows 10, before continuing installation please see: Instructions for Windows 10)
  3. Run Programs->Project Ironfist->Ironfist
  4. See it in action by trying out the demo map "Sorrow's End." (It's a Small map available under the "Expansion Maps" menu.)

Ironfist has been tested on Window XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8, and should work on any of them.

Project Ironfist requires the original game to run, but does not require a CD. The GOG.com version ( http://www.gog.com/game/heroes_of_might_and_magic_2_gold_edition ) works particularly well. If you are interested in contributing to Project Ironfist, we can help you buy a copy; E-mail Darmani and make a request.

Project Ironfist installs cleanly next to the original game. You can still play the original game after installing Ironfist. However, you cannot open Ironfist-only maps in the original game or map editor without it crashing.

On one of my comp i got missing MSVCR100D.dll error (64 bit win7 home premium, H2 gold from GoG). Downloaded the file from net. Thereafter it started to complain about wing32.dll not installed correctly. Moving it to Windows/System32 has not helped yet.
On second computer a dll reading error without specifying what dll it is (32 bit Win XP, H2 PoL CD).

Thanks a lot. It's really important we figure out all the problems that can happen when running the game if we are ever going to distribute to a wide audience.

What are the exact error messages you are getting?

I looked back at my notes. When you say "move," do you mean "move" or "copy?" Apparently you actually need to remove wing32.dll from the program directory.

If i do have wing32.dll in H2 or windows root directory not C:\windows\system32 then it finds it and asks to move (copying would not change the errormessage) it to said location. If it is there, it claims that it is not existing. Downloaded from net another copy, but no change.
I did get it working though, by making a copy of the wing32.dll also into Windows\SysWOW64 directory. Problems are still that on my HD monitor the game runs in ultratiny window and it gives "no CD" message (GOG version) allowing only limited gameplay.

Thank you. I seemed to remember needing to install the DLL in an additional directory on Vista/Windows 7, but an article I found on the Internet disagreed.

Try pressing F4 for fullscreen mode. Normally you can select that from the menu, but, at the moment, all menubars are broken. (They're defined in the special "resources" section of the executable, which did not get properly placed in the recompiled version.)

I personally play from a virtual CD drive, but that's not a reasonable option for people with only the GOG version. I should have a CD-optional version up within a few hours.

Done.

I understood it was not exactly a Vista/Win7 issue but that 64bit systems have two system directories -system32 and syswow64. It may be referring to one while in truth there is some redirecting into other.

F4 works, but we need to get a windowed mode. In full screen top and bottom of screen are cut off. Additionally, in large screen the pixelation becomes more obvious and disturbing.

By using PoL CD on GoG gold+ ironfist it worked fine. WoG and Equilibris both disable CD chack and i do not think there will be any issues if it is removed by an H2 mod. And it would be really great if the opera sound would work smooth. As far as i know neither GoG Dosbox not current Ironfist manages that.

In what way is windowed mode not working? When you say "ultratiny window," do you not just mean the default 640x480 window? What is being cut off in full-screen mode -- it looks fairly normal for me. Does the GOG.com version also have that problem?

I know what needs to be done to get the window controls working again, but it requires learning about Windows resource files. If it bothers you in the meantime, you can set the window dimensions in the registry. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\New World Computing\Heroes of Might and Magic II\1.0, keys "Main Game Width" and "Main Game Height."

The CD check is essential -- you need to make sure the CD is available before you try to play video or audio from it. What you can do is skip the video and audio when unavailable (current version) or have the user place it in a folder and load it from there. GOG.com version users have a head start; the videos and music are already placed in folders. I'm currently piggybacking off the existing no-CD mode, which does the former, except that I've modified it to allow standalone maps to be played. The code that skips the videos when there's no CD also skips the campaign menus, seeing as campaigns were disabled outright in the original no-CD mode. Some work will need to be done to fix this.

Getting the opera working is definitely something I really want to do -- when you mount a .iso image, the audio portion is not also mounted. The hardest part for me would actually be the final step of playing the MP3s; I can do the rest fairly easily.

Window controls work! It was easier than expected.
